A Lawyer Representing Cyclists in
North and South Carolina Injured by Inattentive Drivers

I founded The Karney Law firm in 1979 and have been serving injured cyclists in North and South Carolina ever since. Having witnessed the devastation that an inattentive driver can cause, I have committed my firm to maximizing the compensation riders receive for their injuries.

Car Driver's Need to Start Seeing Motorcycles

According to The Hurt Report, the failure of motorists to detect and recognize motorcycles in traffic is the predominate cause of motorcycle accidents. Whether an accident occurs as a result of a car making a right or left-hand turn, a u-turn, a lane-change, or rear ending a motorcycle, it is rarely the cyclist fault.

Almost every driver has seen a Start Seeing Motorcycles bumper sticker. It may be on the car of a motorcycle rider, but just as often it is the wife, child or parent of a cyclist. Many of the people that place those stickers on their car have been impacted by a motorcycle accident injury or death.

I recognize that injuries caused by inattentive drivers have a greater impact than the physical injury to the rider. Many families suffer financial losses as a result of lost work hours. Others must deal with a combination of financial losses and emotional distress associated with brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, and disfigurement.

By combining my experience in handling motorcycle accidents with an individual analysis of each case, I am able to effectively represent riders that were injured because the car driver did not see them.

Motorcycles have the Same Right to the Road as Cars and Trucks

North and South Carolina clearly states that motorcycles are entitled to full use of a lane and no motor vehicle shall be driven in such a manner as to deprive any motorcycle of the full use of a lane. Nonetheless, many motorcycle accidents are caused by car drivers that fail to:

  • Recognize that motorcycles have equal rights to the road.
  • Follow traffic rules.
  • Yield the right of way.
  • Provide adequate cushion between their car and motorcycle.
  • See motorcycles in traffic.

The Hurt Report states that, the likelihood of injury is extremely high in these motorcycle accidents. Ninety-eight percent of the multiple vehicle collisions result in some kind of injury to the motorcycle rider. Forty-five percent result in serious injuries.
